I first heard about this on Wednesday, with all this news coming out about Farve possibly coming out of retirement, there were also rumors that Farve wanted to come and play in Carolina of all places. I wasn’t originally going to write about this rumor because it is so stupid, but because everyone seems to be talking about it, I’m giving in and writing an article explaining how impossible this rumor is.
According to Pro Football Talk, Brett Favre’s agent says that Favre wants to play with the Carolina Panthers, but let’s go through and look at all the reasons why this just isn’t going to happen.
First of all, Favre would have to come in and compete for the starting job with Jake Delhomme. Maybe Favre would have won the job a few years ago, but he’s 38 now, and Jake runs the offense. I guess it would be plausible if Favre wanted to go to somewhere like Miami, or even Chicago, places where there is no proven starter at quarterback. But Carolina? Come on. All signs point that Jake is going to be totally healthy come the start of the season, which means Favre would most likely not start the first few games, unless Jake plays horribly or gets hurt again. And, this is all assuming that the Packers don’t want Favre back if he really has come out of retirement.
Another reason Favre won’t come to Charlotte is because he doesn’t have any ties with the team. Favre has never played under John Fox or Jeff Davidson, or the quarterbacks coach, so there aren’t any real coaching reasons why he would want to come to Carolina. You could say that Favre wants to come because Carolina is close to home, but why not just play for the Saints?
Finally, even if, for some highly unlikely reason, Favre does decide he wants to play for the Panthers, the Panthers would have to agree to sign him. I don’t know how much money he would want, but the Panthers are already squeezed for cap space as it is. Also Head Coach John Fox has shown that he doesn’t want any veteran quarterback help, and I would think the Panthers want to steer clear of old quarterbacks after having to pick up ancient, Vinny Testaverde last season. I’m not so sure I would want Favre playing for the Panthers, I would actually feel much better if Delhomme was under center.
The fact is that this is by far one of the most ridiculous rumors I’ve heard in a long time, and I feel embarrassed to even be writing about it. But as ridiculous as it does sound, and as unreliable as he agent is, maybe the reason Favre would want to come play for Carolina is he thinks that Carolina is going to contend for a title next season. Maybe Favre thinks he has the best chance at another Superbowl if he come to play for the Panthers. Not a chance. This rumor is probably made up, and entirely false; something to get people talking. So just forget about Favre coming to play for the Panthers, it ain’t happening.
