Panthers had all the pieces in perfect place to make a run at last season’s Superbowl until they got whacked 13-33 by the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC Championship game. Was this a case of the Carolina Panthers having an off-night. If not then was it a sign of things to come?

The Carolina Panthers Quarterback Jake Delhomme had 6 turnovers in that game of last season but the organization of the club thought nothing of it apparently, signing Delhomme to a 5-year contract extension.

They have return 21 of 22 starters from 2008 season’s 12-4 squad so this years Carolina Panthers should have similar success. One can bet Carolina +225 to win the NFC South this season.

This year Carolina likes to pound the ball behind a monster offensive line with Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams. The offense of Carolina averaged 26 points per game with a philosophy of run-first last season but Delhomme’s turnovers were killers.

He is an accurate passer and also has an excellent leadership skills. He benefits from having a bona fide All-Pro in WR Steve Smith.

According to the conventional wisdom Carolina Panthers is a tough team to play in December. There is some merit to this. The club has gone 21-12 in December and January under John Fox.

In this year 2009, the club better hope conventional wisdom holds just because last years December schedule is a killer.

Now the club will probably be in a position that is well with a record which could be somewhere from 7-5 to 9-3. It depends on the injuries and whether Meeks’ defense works out well.

Tampa Bay will probably, around the NFC South, be nursing a record boasting 3 or 4 wins and will be a spoiler at the best.

It is also believed that this year the Falcons’ defense keeps them grounded, and even they might have in the neighborhood of 5 or 6 wins at this point.

The long snapper of Carolina Panthers, Jason Kyle, for the last 8 seasons, has signed with the New Orleans Saints.

This in fact means that Carolina Panthers will go ahead with their experiment of using one of two rookies i.e. J.J. Jansen or Nick Sundberg. The club brought in three long snappers this off-season, but since then have cut Patrick McDonald.

The club was so tight under the salary cap they it did not made any offer to Kyle, who was an unrestricted free agent.

Jason Kyle had never a bad snap in this 8 seasons. He played in 128 games for the Panthers and 7th most in team history.

Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis said in a statement, “Jason is a quality veteran player and we saw in him a chance to upgrade our kicking game.” He also added, “I’ve known him since we drafted him in Seattle and going up against him twice a year for the last eight seasons with Carolina, he has always been impressive.”

Were you surprised by the length and the money involved in the contract, especially the $20 million in guaranteed money?

0ANo, Head Coach John Fox and General Manager Marty Hurney are confident that Jake Delhomme is the guy at quarterback, despite some criticism from the fans. This contract allows Delhomme to end his career at Carolina, and the $20 million guaranteed is well worth keeping him, considering his is amongst the handful of active quarterbacks who have lead a team to the Super Bowl.

What do Panthers fans think of Delhomme? It sounds like opinions are somewhat split. Secondly, what do you think about him?

I think that with Delhomme you either like him or you don’t. Delhomme isn’t the most accurate quarterback in the league, and makes a lot of stupid decisions for a veteran quarterback, but his does manage to win games. Personally I think locking up Delhomme through 2014 is the right move, one because the Panthers still don’t have a clear successor, and two because he is the life of the team. When Delhomme was lost for the season two years ago the Panthers barely managed to collect seven wins. Delhomme does have bad games every so often, but he has one far more games for the Panthers than he has lost.

The Panthers had a surprising season, by ma ny accounts, last year, with their 12-4 record. Then came Delhomme’s horrible playoff game. Are his detractors thinking about that one game too much, and forgetting about the total body of work from last season?

Perhaps a bit, but rightfully so, six turnovers, at home, during a playoff game is inexcusable. Delhomme played terribly yes, but he also had quite a few great games during the season that put the Panthers in that position, particularly three game winning drives late in the fourth quarter against San Diego, Green Bay and New Orleans, without those drives I don’t know if the Panthers would have made it to the playoffs last season.

At 34 years old, do you think Delhomme can lead the Panthers to a Super Bowl again?

Yes, but not by putting the team on his shoulders. Right now the Panthers have one of the best running games in football. That combined with a solid defense and Steve Smith still makes the Panthers contenders in my mind, the key will be if Delhomme can realize when he’s having a bad day and be content handing the ball off to DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.

The story on Jake Delhomme’s contract extension can be found here: http://www.football.com/article/jake_delhomme.html

Even though the expectations of John Fox, the coach of Carolina Panthers, Julius Peppers was not among the players who attended the 1st day — after his angry voice this off-season related to the franchise tag and a subsequent trade demand also.

The Carolina Panthers General Manager Marty Hurney said The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer this Thursday he has had positive discussions this week with Carl Carey, the agent of Pepper, but the 4-time Pro Bowl selection has said that he will never sign a long-term contract with the NFC South team.

The 2nd overall pick in 2002 NFL Draft out of North Carolina, Julius Peppers had switched off from left to right defensive end last season and recorded a career-high 14 1/2 sacks with 51 tackles.

Even if the fans have a firm believe that their widespread complaints about a franchise’s decision-making can at last have an effect, they in fact know that no one with power cares of this.

Truly speaking, the decision-makers of Panthers can care less what their fans think they should be doing.

Starting on Monday morning after the Carolina’s meltdown against Arizona, the local talk show hosts fielded angry fan after the angry fan complaining that their ire for Jake Delhomme was correct, and the Carolina Panthers should fire him post-haste.

As you all may remember when Julius Peppers declared through his agent that he wanted to move on from the Panthers’ 4-3 scheme, then the fans of the Panthers vilified the man that had given them more spectacular feats of human physical achievement than they could have ever deserved

Baker had spent his past 3 seasons in the same position with St. Louis. He also worked for Minnesota, Detroit and San Diego by coaching the defensive line and linebackers.

Baker replaced Sal Sunseri. Sunseri left last month to become an assistant at Alabama. He was one of four defensive aides to leave the Panthers.

Panthers since have hired Ron Meeks as defensive co-ordinator, Richard Smith, the linebackers coach and Ron Milus to coach the secondary.

They will try to shore up a defence that allowed 30 or even more points in 6 of its final 7 games, including a 33-13 loss to Arizona in the playoffs.
