The Panthers want Jake Delhomme back as their starting QB next season. Alongwith Delhomme. Not only this, the Panthers are also trying to sign him to a contract extension.
Last week the sides confirmed talks that was aimed at a new deal. Jake Delhomme is now in the final year of his contract and scheduled to count over $11 million against the salary cap. The Carolina Panthers could significantly reduce this year’s cap figure – perhaps by half – through an extension.
John Fox, the coach said at the NFL meetings, “There are discussions. There is no question we’ve got a commitment to Jake. Whether that comes to fruition with a contract (extension), I can’t say.”
The agent of Jake Delhomme, Rick Smith, said the uncertainty of the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement factors into the situation. Till a CBA extension is reached, the next season is to be played without a salary cap, and the owners are barred from locking players out before 2011 season.
Carolina Panthers’ firm commitment to Jake Delhomme as their starting QB came despite the increased criticism from fans after his 6 turnover performance in Carolina’s 33-13 home playoff loss to Arizona on January the 10.
